5 What is the importance of being a NCDU member, what makes it beneficial? The NCDU provides training and infor- mation that helps new car dealers stay competitive and optimize success. It pro- vides opportunities to network with fel- low dealers, gleaning fromone another’s experiences and learning best practices in the industry. As an organization the NCDU provides direction on a state and national level in legislation and govern- ment relations that impact dealerships. Do you have past experiences that will help your leadership in NCDU? I’ve served for the past four years on the Board of Directors in various capacities. Additionally, my service on the Ford Dealer Advertising Board has given me relevant experience in trends that affect dealers. What inspired you to serve as a leader within the association? Growing up in the industry and watch- ing my father associate with so many fellow dealers, for whom I have great respect, promoted a desire within me to honor those of the former gen- eration who made it possible for the current generation of dealers to be successful. My dad’s induction into the Utah Automobile Dealer’s Hall of Fame, as well as others who have dedicated their lives to improving the reputa- tion and integrity of the automobile industry, has inspired me to continue this legacy. If you look back at your career and life, what would be three things that you have learned, that you would pass onto a younger member within the auto industry? 1. Treat your customers the way you want to be treated. We’re not just trying to sell a car. We’re trying to create an experience that will bring them back for generations to come. It’s all about the relationship. 2. Give back to the community. Make sure you’re aware, involved and contributing. 3. Hard work really does pay off. Your personal efforts will be rewarded in the automobile industry… or any other for that matter. Describe your all-time favorite ve- hicle (it can be one you’ve owned, or something on your wish list). What are you driving today? My favorite vehicle that I’ve owned was a 2001 Jaguar XK8 convertible. (Ford owned Jaguar at the time.) My wife’s dream car is a 1955 Thunder- bird…which means that is my ultimate wish list car! Tell us about your family. My wife and I have a blended family of ten children and twelve grandchildren. What is your favorite way to spend your free time? Any unusual hobbies? Are you involved in any civic or charitable organizations? I was recently introduced as a die- hard Utah State fan – an accurate moniker. Rain or shine, winning or losing, home or away, you’ll find me cheering and supporting the Ag- gies. I also feel that it’s important to be involved in the local community in a vast variety of ways. We spon- sor many charitable organizations in their fundraising efforts. I have been more personally involved in efforts to address hunger in our community, particularly for children through ex- tending the food pantry to all schools in Cache Valley. I also have a deep interest in local, state and federal politics and feel it is my responsibil- ity to be aware of and responsive to opportunities to serve and lend my voice to issues that affect our families and community. 3
